We are examining how immigrants move between different immigration systems and how smooth or discontinuous these transitions are. The immigration system refers to the competence-based such as work and studies and human rights-based such as protection and family subsystems.

We examine these transitions using registry, survey, and interview data, and we conduct experimental interventions in collaboration with our partners.

Research themes

The research answers, for example, the following questions:

  • What factors support or hinder the transition to education and the workforce?
  • How do changes in residence permit policy affect immigrants’ career paths?
  • How do language skills, networks, and labor market dynamics shape the conditions for these transitions?
  • What opportunities does artificial intelligence offer for recognizing skills and making fair decisions?
